Debbie “Storm” Clark Obituary, BOSTON, Mass. — Debbie “Storm” Clark, one of the original Gladiators on the hit television competition series American Gladiators, has died at the age of 61. Clark lost her life Monday, August 24, at her home in Boston, according to information shared by her son, Crayton.
Clark’s son said her pacemaker stopped working and believes she suffered cardiac arrest. An official cause of death has not been confirmed, and further details surrounding her passing have not been released.
Born in Connecticut in 1965, Clark established herself as an accomplished athlete well before entering the American Gladiators arena. She competed in basketball, soccer and track and field and later set her sights on the U.S. Olympic handball team.
In 1991, while training in Colorado, Clark watched American Gladiators and initially decided she wanted to audition as a Contender. After travelling to Los Angeles, she was noticed by an assistant producer and invited to try out. Her athletic ability impressed producers so much that she was ultimately cast as a Gladiator instead.
She became known to millions of viewers as Storm and made her television debut in 1991, initially stepping in for an injured Gladiator named Gold. Clark became particularly recognized for competing in events such as Powerball and Joust, where her athletic ability made her a formidable presence.
Clark also appeared on the American Gladiators Live Tour, where she helped open the tour by singing the U.S. national anthem. Her time with the Gladiators was later affected by a serious ACL injury sustained during Powerball on the tour, but she continued to demonstrate resilience after leaving the arena.
In later years, Clark faced major personal challenges, including a period of homelessness, which she spoke about publicly. She hoped her experiences could help and inspire others experiencing difficult circumstances. Above all, she was remembered as a devoted mother. She is survived by her son, Crayton.
Clark’s passing has prompted an outpouring of remembrance from American Gladiators fans and those who knew her story. She is being remembered not only as Storm, the powerful athlete who competed before millions of television viewers, but also as an athlete, performer, survivor and mother.
