Diego Johnson Obituary, HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. — Diego Johnson, 36, of Detroit, Michigan, was killed Thursday morning after a single-vehicle crash on Woodward Avenue near the Davison Freeway in Highland Park.
The fatal collision took place shortly before 5:30 a.m. Thursday near the intersection of Woodward Avenue and the Davison Freeway. Johnson was a passenger in a black Chevrolet Equinox involved in the crash.
Per to police, the Equinox was traveling northbound on Woodward Avenue when the driver crossed the center line for reasons that remain under investigation. The vehicle subsequently struck a telephone pole, resulting in a severe collision.
Two people were inside the Chevrolet Equinox at the time of the crash. Johnson suffered critical injuries and received medical attention from emergency responders at the scene. Despite those efforts, he was pronounced dead.
The driver also sustained serious injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Authorities have not released the driver’s identity or offered additional information about the person’s condition.
Police said excessive speed and alcohol are believed to have been contributing factors in the crash. However, investigators have not determined why the driver crossed the center line, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The Highland Park Police Department and Michigan State Police are working to reconstruct the collision and determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash. Woodward Avenue was closed in both directions near the crash site, while traffic restrictions also affected the nearby Davison Freeway during the investigation.
