VAN ZANDT COUNTY, Texas — Firefighters from multiple counties are battling the Corky Fire in Van Zandt County, where the wildfire has grown to approximately 300 acres and was reported to be only 10% contained Thursday evening, August 27.
The fire is burning near Highway 64 and Van Zandt County Road 3406 in the Myrtle Springs area, approximately six miles northwest of Canton, according to information shared by local emergency agencies and authorities.
The Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office stated it is assisting at the scene alongside numerous agencies from Van Zandt, Kaufman, Henderson and Hunt counties as emergency personnel continue working to contain the fire.
The Terrell Volunteer Fire Department noted that its crews were operating on the Corky Fire in support of Van Zandt County firefighters. Brush 1, Brush 2 and Engine 1 were deployed, while other Kaufman County responders from Elmo, College Mound and Mabank were also assisting with the incident.
Smith County Emergency Services District 2 said the Texas Division of Emergency Management requested its assistance with the approximately 300-acre fire. The agency deployed command staff and crews assigned to several engines, brush units and a plow unit to support firefighting operations.
Authorities have asked travelers to avoid the area while emergency crews remain engaged with the wildfire. Neighbors who see additional fires have been advised to call 911 or alert nearby first responders.
The Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office announced that a media briefing was scheduled for 9 p.m. Thursday at the sheriff’s office at 1220 West Dallas Street in Canton. Authorities said further questions and available updates regarding the incident would be addressed during the briefing.
As firefighting operations continue, agencies are urging the public to remain clear of the affected area and cooperate with emergency personnel. No additional information about injuries, property damage or the cause of the fire was provided in the available updates.
